Frequently Asked Questions About Cold Brew Accessories
Should I buy a cold brew kit or individual pieces?
If you're starting from scratch, a kit is the faster path. Cold brew kits bundle a brewing pitcher, filter, and measuring scoop together so everything fits and works out of the box. If you already own a pitcher or prefer a specific filter style, buying individual pieces lets you customise your setup. Either way, the essentials are the same - a container, a filter, and a way to measure your ratio. How is cold brew different from iced coffee?
Iced coffee is hot-brewed coffee poured over ice. Cold brew never touches hot water - it steeps in cold or room-temperature water for 12 to 24 hours. That slow extraction produces a smoother, lower-acid concentrate with less bitterness. The flavour profile is noticeably different, and the concentrate stays fresh in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Can I use my espresso grinder for cold brew?
Yes. If you already own an EspressoWorks grinder, dial it all the way to the coarsest setting and you're ready. Cold brew needs a grind roughly the texture of raw sugar - much coarser than espresso. Any burr or blade grinder that reaches that coarse range will work, so there's no need to buy a separate grinder just for cold brew.
How long does cold brew concentrate last in the fridge?
Properly sealed in an airtight container, cold brew concentrate keeps for 10 to 14 days. After that, the flavour starts to flatten and turn stale. Batch a full pitcher on the weekend and you'll have enough for the whole week without brewing again.
Can I use cold brew accessories for regular iced tea or infusions?
Most cold brew pitchers with built-in mesh filters work for any cold-steep drink - loose leaf tea, fruit infusions, herb water. The filter keeps solids out of the liquid the same way regardless of what you're steeping. It's one piece of equipment that pulls double duty.
