Getting Started

What should I wash before first use?

Before switching on your machine for the first time, give all the removable parts a rinse to get rid of any production residue:

  • Measuring spoon & tamper
  • Lid of electric coffee grinder
  • 2 x porcelain cups
  • Stainless steel heating tray
  • Portafilter
  • Single and double espresso filter baskets
  • Steam wand
  • Milk frothing cup
  • Detachable 1.25L water tank

How do I power up my machine for the first time?

  1. Place your espresso machine on a flat, dry surface.
  2. Make sure the control dial is set to the centre "●" dot. Do not plug in the machine yet.
  3. Remove the portafilter if it's locked into the brew head.
  4. Lift out the water tank, fill it with water up to the MAX line, and place it back in the machine.
  5. Check once more that the control dial is set to the centre "●" dot.
  6. Plug in your machine.
  7. Press the ON/OFF power button. The POWER light will illuminate solid orange. Once the machine has warmed up, the green READY light will come on.
  8. Place an empty cup under the brew head. You're now ready to make your first espresso.

Brewing Espresso

How do I make an espresso?

  1. If you'd like warm cups, place them on the heating tray on top of the machine for 5-10 minutes before brewing.
  2. Insert your desired filter basket (single or double) into the portafilter.
  3. Grind your beans and use the measuring scoop & tamper to fill the portafilter basket with the correct amount of coffee. Tamp it down firmly - but not too tight, as this will restrict water flow and affect the taste.
  4. Place the portafilter up into the brew head, turn and lock it in place. Place your cup underneath.
  5. Turn the control dial to "ESPRESSO". Once you have enough espresso in the cup, turn the dial back to the centre "●" position.
  6. Clean out the portafilter and go again!

Notes on brewing:

  • Make sure your grind is suitable for espresso. It should be fine, but not powdery. If it feels like powder when rubbed between your fingers, it's too fine and water won't flow properly.
  • It's normal for the filter to be wet after brewing - this is how you get that perfect crema.
  • We recommend preparing your milk before removing the portafilter from the machine. This gives time for residual water to evaporate from the coffee grounds.

Frothing Milk

How do I froth milk with the steam wand?

  1. Fill the stainless steel frothing cup about one-third full with fresh, cold milk.
  2. Direct the steam wand away from the drip tray so it's easy to position. Hold the frothing cup at an angle so that the top of the steam wand sits just below the surface of the milk.
  3. Turn the control dial to "STEAM".
  4. When the foam reaches your desired level, turn the control dial back to the centre "●" dot.
  5. Pour the steamed froth into your espresso.
  6. Clean the steam wand immediately - loosen the steam nozzle and wash it under running water. Clean the pipe with a cloth.

Cleaning & Maintenance

How do I do a general clean of my machine?

  1. Unplug the machine and make sure it's properly cooled down.
  2. Detach the steam wand plastic piece, remove the water tank, remove the drip tray, and remove the stainless steel heating tray.
  3. Thoroughly wash each of these attachments - as well as the portafilter and filter baskets - and dry them.
  4. Wipe down the outside of the machine.
  5. Once everything is dry, put it all back in place.

Do not use alcohol or solvent-based cleaners on the machine or any attachments.

How do I deep clean and descale my machine?

  1. Fill the water tank with water and a household descaling agent of your choice up to the MAX level.
  2. Place the frothing cup under the steam wand. Make sure the control dial is on the centre "●" dot. Press ON/OFF and wait for the machine to heat up. The POWER light will illuminate red.
  3. Once the green READY light comes on, turn the control dial to "ESPRESSO" and let enough water flow through for about 2 cups. Then turn the dial back to the centre "●" dot and wait 5 seconds.
  4. When the green READY light comes on again, turn the control dial to "STEAM" and wait for 2 minutes. Then turn the dial back to the centre "●" dot.
  5. Press and hold the ON/OFF button for 3 seconds to turn the machine off. All indicator lights should go out. Wait 15 minutes while the descaling agent works.
  6. Restart the machine (control dial on centre dot). Once the READY light is green, turn the dial to "ESPRESSO" and let the machine flush out all the remaining water and descaling agent. Turn the dial back to centre.
  7. Fill the water tank to MAX with fresh water. Turn the dial to "ESPRESSO" and let all the water flush through. Repeat this step 3 times to thoroughly rinse the system.

How do I clean the filter baskets?

After using the machine, allow it to cool down. Unlock the portafilter and empty the used grounds into the sink. Rinse the portafilter and filter basket under running water and dry well.

If the filter baskets seem clogged, use a tiny needle to pop out any grounds caught in the filter holes.

Using the Coffee Grinder

How do I use the EspressoWorks electric coffee grinder?

The 7-Piece set comes with a standalone electric blade grinder. Here's how to use it:

  1. Wipe the grinding chamber and blades with a damp, lint-free cloth or sponge before first use. Warning: the blades are extremely sharp - handle with care.
  2. Place the grinder on a flat surface and remove the lid.
  3. Pour coffee beans into the grinding chamber. Do not use more than 30g of beans.
  4. Secure the lid onto the motor base, aligning the arrow with the "OFF" marking.
  5. Plug in the grinder.
  6. Turn the lid clockwise to the "ON" mark. The grinder will run as long as the lid is held in the ON position. Release the lid and it springs back to OFF, stopping the grinder.
  7. Check the consistency of the grounds through the transparent lid. Never remove the lid until the blades have stopped completely.
  8. Once you've reached your desired grind, unplug the grinder.
  9. Remove the lid and pour out the grounds.

Important: Do not run the grinder continuously for more than 30 seconds. After a full 30-second cycle, let it rest for 3 minutes before using again.

How do I clean the coffee grinder?

  1. Always switch off and unplug before cleaning.
  2. Never let the motor unit, power cable, or plug get wet. Only the transparent lid can be immersed in water.
  3. Clean the lid with water and mild detergent. The lid is not dishwasher-safe. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  4. Never immerse the motor base in water or fill the grinding chamber with water.
  5. Wipe the grinding chamber and blades with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. Handle blades with care - they're extremely sharp.
