What should I do before using my machine for the first time?

Machine and accessories:

  1. Wipe down the espresso machine with a clean, damp cloth. Rinse the water tank and lid, the portafilter, the two filters, the drip tray, and all other accessories with mild detergent and clean water.
  2. Set up the machine in a suitable location following the safety notes below.
  3. Completely unwind the mains cable and plug into a properly installed, easily accessible power outlet.

Important notes:

  • A small amount of smoke or odour during first use is normal - this is from production-related residue and not a defect.
  • Don't place the machine below kitchen wall units or cupboards. Rising steam can cause damage.
  • Never operate the machine without water. If this happens, the blue START/STOP light will flash and the LCD screen will show a NO WATER warning.
  • Only use water in the water tank - never milk or other liquids.
  • Never overfill the portafilter.
  • Always place a suitable container below the brew head and steam wand before operating.

Coffee grinder safety notes:

  • Never use attachments or accessories not recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Check there are no hard objects in the grinder chamber before use - this could damage the machine and cause injury.
  • This appliance can be used by children aged 8 and above, and by people with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, only with supervision and instruction on safe use.
  • For household use only. Do not use outdoors.

Mounting the Bean Hopper

Step 1 - Align the hopper rings

Look at the bottom of the bean hopper. There are two rings with line markings - these must be aligned with each other before placing the hopper on the machine.

Step 2 - Position on the grinder

Place the bean hopper on the grinder so that the "OPEN LOCK" symbol and the line markings sit directly above the ▲GRIND SIZE marking on the machine.

Step 3 - Lock into the grind range

Turn the bean hopper clockwise past the small notch until the ▲GRIND SIZE marking falls within the 1-15 number range on the hopper.

If the hopper won't sit flush or the arrows aren't lining up, double-check the alignment in Step 1. This is the most commonly missed step. See our Troubleshooting page for help.

Using the Built-In Grinder

Step 1 - Set the grind size

Rotate the bean hopper clockwise until the ▲GRIND SIZE marking points to your desired setting on the 1-15 scale.

Step 2 - Place the portafilter

Insert the filter basket into the portafilter. To swap baskets, use the edge of one filter to lever the other out of the portafilter.

Step 3 - Grind

Slide the portafilter into the holder underneath the grinder chute. Either set the grind time via the LCD (press MENU four times), or simply tilt the portafilter handle downwards to press the edge of the filter basket against the grinder button. The grinder runs as long as the button is held down.

Step 4 - Finish the grind

Release the grinder button once the filter is slightly full. Wait until all grounds have stopped falling, then carefully remove the portafilter from the holder.

Tamping Coffee

Step 1 - Distribute evenly

Tap the portafilter gently on the worktop to settle the grounds, then spread them out evenly with a teaspoon or your finger. Don't press down yet.

Step 2 - Tamp

Place the portafilter on the edge of a worktop for stability. Position the tamper straight on top of the grounds and press down firmly and evenly. The surface should be flat and level.

Step 3 - Clean the rim

Carefully lift the tamper and wipe off any loose grounds from the edge of the filter. A clean rim ensures a proper seal when you lock the portafilter into the brew head.

Locking the Portafilter

Step 1 - Align and insert

Align the portafilter lugs with the slots in the brew head and insert.

Step 2 - Twist to lock

Twist the portafilter counter-clockwise until the handle lines up with the LOCK TIGHT marking on the brew head. It should feel firm and secure.

Brewing Espresso

Step 1 - Pre-heat your cup

Place your cup on the cup warmer on top of the machine for 5-10 minutes (optional, but recommended). Then place the cup under the brew head.

Step 2 - Select cup mode

The machine defaults to 1 CUP mode when turned on. Press the CUPS button once to switch to 2 CUP mode if you want a double.

Step 3a - Single espresso settings

For a single, press the SIZE button and turn the DIAL to adjust the volume (30-50ml range, preset is 40ml). The grind time for a single ranges from 2-15 seconds and can be adjusted via the DIAL.

Step 3b - Double espresso settings

For a double, turn the DIAL to set the grind time (2-20 second range). Press the SIZE button and turn the DIAL to adjust the volume (60-90ml range, preset is 80ml).

Step 4 - Start brewing

Press START/STOP to begin brewing. The blue START/STOP light will stay solid during brewing.

Step 5 - Done

When the blue light turns off, your espresso is done. Carefully remove the portafilter (twist clockwise to release).

Frothing Milk

Step 1 - Prepare the milk

Fill the stainless steel frothing pitcher about one-third full with fresh, cold milk. Skimmed milk produces the best froth.

Step 2 - Set the steam program

Press the MENU button three times to select STEAM. The STEAM icon will flash for about 10 seconds while the machine preheats. Adjust the steam time using the DIAL (10-90 seconds, preset is 30 seconds).

Step 3 - Start steaming

Move the steam wand away from the drip tray. Hold the pitcher at an angle so the tip of the steam wand sits just below the surface of the milk. Press START/STOP. A countdown appears on the LCD.

Step 4 - Texture the milk

Keep the wand tip near the surface to introduce air - this is the "drawing phase" that creates froth. Aim to one side of the pitcher to create a swirling vortex. When the volume increases, lower the wand deeper for the "rolling phase" - this distributes the bubbles evenly and heats the milk through. Press START/STOP to stop when the froth is at your desired level.

Step 5 - Pour and enjoy

Pour the frothed milk into your espresso. For latte art, tap the pitcher gently on the counter first to pop any large bubbles.

Customising LCD Programs

Hot water

  1. Press the MENU button twice. The HOT WATER icon will appear on the LCD.
  2. Turn the DIAL to set the drip time (10-99 seconds, preset is 60 seconds).
  3. Press START/STOP. Hot water will flow from the steam wand. A countdown appears on screen.

Steam

  1. Press the MENU button three times. The STEAM icon will appear.
  2. The icon will flash for about 10 seconds during preheating.
  3. Turn the DIAL to adjust the steam time (10-90 seconds, preset is 30 seconds).
  4. Press START/STOP to begin. A countdown appears on screen.

Grind time

  1. Press the MENU button four times. The GRIND icon will appear.
  2. Turn the DIAL to set the grind time (2-30 seconds).
  3. Press START/STOP, or tilt the portafilter handle down to press the grinder button. A countdown appears on screen.

Cleaning & Maintenance

How often should I clean my machine and what's involved?

After every use:

  • Clean the brew head, steam wand, portafilter, and filter baskets.
  • Wipe down the housing with a damp cloth.
  • Empty the drip tray.

Regularly:

  • Run the quick or deep clean cycle (see below).
  • Check the mains cable for any damage.

Important:

  • Always unplug the machine and let it cool completely before cleaning.
  • Don't use abrasive cleaners or scouring sponges.
  • Never immerse the machine in water.
  • The water tank, bean hopper, and drip tray are hand-wash only - not dishwasher safe.

Quick clean cycle

  1. Fill the water tank (don't exceed the MAX line).
  2. Press the CLEAN button within 3 seconds of turning the machine on.
  3. Press START/STOP. The cleaning process takes up to 4 minutes.

Deep clean cycle

  1. Fill the water tank (don't exceed the MAX line).
  2. Press and hold the CLEAN button for 3 seconds - the button light will start flashing.
  3. Press START/STOP. The deep clean takes up to 7 minutes.

Clean the bean hopper

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine.
  2. Remove the bean hopper.
  3. Clean the lid and hopper with water and mild detergent.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Wipe with a dry cloth and allow to dry completely before reattaching.

Cleaning the Conical Burr Grinder

Step 1 - Unlock the top burr

Rotate the top burr clockwise to unlock it. Carefully remove it.

Step 2 - Clean the top burr

Remove any debris from the top burr using the grinder brush.

Step 3 - Clean the lower burr

With the top burr removed, use the grinder brush to clean the lower burr inside the machine. Use a thin stick to pry out any grounds stuck between the blades.

Step 4 - Clear the grinder chute

Use the other end of the grinder brush to push out any compacted grounds in the grinder chute.

We recommend cleaning the grinder at least once a week if you're using it daily. If the grinder jams or stops working, see our Troubleshooting page.

Cleaning Other Parts

Cleaning and unblocking the steam wand

  1. Use the steam wand cleaning pin (stored in the drip tray slot) to poke through the small hole at the bottom of the steam nozzle and clear any blockage.
  2. Hold a container under the steam wand and run HOT WATER for 30 seconds to flush out dissolved residue.

Clean the steam wand after every use to prevent milk buildup.

Cleaning the portafilter and filter baskets

  1. Use the portafilter cleaning brush to remove any remaining coffee grounds or debris.
  2. If the filter holes are blocked, use the other end of the steam wand cleaning pin to clear them.

Rinse the portafilter and baskets under running water after every use.

How often should I descale my machine?

Descale approximately every 2-6 weeks, depending on your water hardness and how often you use the machine. Signs that descaling is needed: excessive steam, slower brewing, and weaker espresso.

Limescale builds up over time and affects espresso quality, water flow, and the machine's lifespan. The thicker the buildup, the harder it is to remove - so regular descaling is worth staying on top of.

Use a descaling agent suitable for espresso machines and follow the instructions in the user manual.

How should I store my machine if I'm not using it for a while?

  1. Unplug the machine from the mains.
  2. Clean the machine thoroughly and let it dry completely.
  3. Store it (with all accessories) in a dry, clean, frost-free place away from direct sunlight, out of reach of children and animals.
  4. Use the machine cover to prevent dust buildup.
